CS visits Islands District (with photos)

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited Islands District this afternoon (October 17). She met with members of the Islands District Council and the Lantau Development Alliance, and toured the community farm and food waste collection points of the "To Unearth the Treasure Kitchen Waste Recycle Scheme" in Mui Wo.

Mrs Lam started her district visit by meeting with members of the Islands District Council to hear their views on local issues and development, including traffic and transport issues, district administration and the Tung Chung New Town Extension Study.

Accompanied by the Chairman of the Islands District Council, Mr Chow Yuk-tong, and District Officer (Islands) Mr Anthony Li, Mrs Lam then proceeded to food waste recycling facilities in Mui Wo under the "To Unearth the Treasure Kitchen Waste Recycle Scheme" run by the Hong Kong Outlying Islands Women's Association. Mrs Lam visited the Scheme's environmental education farm there and food waste collection points located in Tai Tei Tong and Nam Pin Wai, Mui Wo. Funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund, the "To Unearth the Treasure Kitchen Waste Recycle Scheme" aims to raise environmental awareness among local residents and encourage them to separate and collect daily food waste, thereby reducing the amount of waste disposed of at landfills. Since its launch in 2011, some 150 families, one primary school and three restaurants have participated in the Scheme, collecting 24 tonnes of food waste.

Before concluding the visit, Mrs Lam went to AsiaWorld-Expo to meet members of the Lantau Development Alliance to listen to their views on the planning and development of Lantau Island.
