With the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels (HKETO, Brussels), five Hong Kong films, "Drug War" and "Blind Detective" directed by Mr Johnnie To, "The Wrath of Vajra 3D" directed by Mr Law Wing-cheong, "Rigor Mortis" directed by Mr Juno Mak and "Vulgaria" directed by Mr Pang Ho-cheung, are being screened at the 46th Sitges - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, Spain, from October 11 to 20.
Speaking at a Hong Kong cocktail hosted by HKETO, Brussels at the film festival yesterday evening (October 13, Sitges time), Deputy Representative of HKETO, Brussels, Miss Drew Lai, said, "Hong Kong has long been a place of open borders and open minds, with a cultural mix of Chinese and Western influences.
"We safeguard and respect cultural freedom and artistic creation. Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are enshrined in our constitutional document, the Basic Law. This helps to create an environment that encourages creativity and diversity."
Miss Lai noted that Hong Kong was not only good at making movies, but its unique cityscape and skyscape also provided stunning settings to local and overseas filmmakers alike. More than 10 foreign productions were filmed in Hong Kong in 2011 and 2012.
Miss Lai also took the opportunity to recommend a visit to the major exhibition being held at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum to mark the 40th anniversary of the demise of Bruce Lee.
The Sitges - International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia is a major fantasy film festival in the world attended by top-level film stars, directors and producers.
