The Customs and Excise Department (C&ED) and Marine Police today (September 27) smashed a speedboat smuggling case in a joint anti-smuggling operation at a jetty at Hang Hau Tsuen, Lau Fau Shan. Twenty-five boxes of electronic goods, including tablet computers and used mobile phones were seized with a total value of about $1.1 million.
At about 2.30am this morning, officers of the Marine Enforcement Group of C&ED and the Task Force of Marine Police West Division found three suspicious men using trolleys to convey boxes of goods onto a speedboat at a jetty at Hang Hau Tsuen, Lau Fau Shan. Officers took immediate enforcement action. The suspects immediately fled with the speedboat. Subsequently, officers seized the 25 boxes of goods at the scene.
Hong Kong Customs will continue to take stringent enforcement action with the Marine Police to combat sea smuggling activities.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, smuggling is a serious offence and any person found guilty of exporting unmanifested cargoes is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
