Police express disappointment over behaviour endangering public safety
*********************************************************

Police estimated that around 400 people attended the public meetings held outside Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School, Wan Chai this afternoon (September 15). Most participants expressed their views in a lawful and orderly manner. However, a small number of people ignored Policeˇ¦s appeals and warnings, broke through the Policeˇ¦s cordon line and occupied the carriageway of Oi Kwan Road causing obstruction and danger to other road users. Police had to take immediate resolute actions to minimise the impact upon public safety and public order. Police were disappointed at such acts.

Police reiterate we respect the publicˇ¦s freedoms of expression, speech and assembly and always handle public meetings, demonstrations and processions in a fair, just and impartial manner in accordance with the laws of Hong Kong.

The Police commander at scene deployed suitable manpower and implemented the most appropriate crowd safety and traffic safety management measures according to the prevailing situation and circumstances, so as to ensure public safety and public order and at the same time enable participants to express their views. Police were grateful to local residents and road users for their understanding and tolerance with regard to any inconvenience caused during the event.

It is the policy of Police to facilitate all lawful and peaceful public events while at the same time ensuring public safety and public order. Members of the public should comply with the laws of Hong Kong and maintain social order when expressing their views.
