Chief Executive saddened by death of Dr Lee Quo-wei

     The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (August 12) expressed his sadness at the passing of Dr Lee Quo-wei.

     Dr Lee was a veteran banker and the former Chairman of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited. Through his work as the Hong Kong Affairs Adviser, the member of the Selection Committee of the First Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, as well as the unofficial member of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council, Dr Lee made significant contributions to Hong Kong's smooth reunification with the motherland and the successful implementation of "One Country, Two Systems".

     As the former Chairman of the Education Commission, Council Chairman of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Court Member of the University of Hong Kong, Dr Lee was also committed to education development. He was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 1997.

     "Dr Lee made tremendous contributions to the financial services, education and public services in Hong Kong and engaged heavily in charitable activities. On behalf of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Dr Lee's family," the Chief Executive said.
