The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

The Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA), in partnership again with three green groups - The Conservancy Association, Friends of the Earth (HK) and the Business Environment Council - are organising the community environmental programme "Green Delight in Estates" in all public rental housing estates in Hong Kong.

The programme is in its seventh phase.  Officiating at the kick-off ceremony of the new phase, the Permanent Secretary for Transport and Housing (Housing) cum the Director of Housing, Mr D W Pescod, said today (August 9) that this programme has raised the environmental awareness and participation of residents and nurtured a green atmosphere in public housing estates.

In the past six phases, HA collaborated with green groups to organise environmental activities along different themes, such as green living carnivals, talks on waste reduction and low carbon living, green visits and quizzes.  Over 12 000 residents have been trained as Green Estate Ambassadors to further promote green messages and activities to other residents with a view to building a green and healthy living environment for the community.

Continuing with last year's theme on "Reduction of Municipal Waste", the "Green Delight in Estates" Phase 7 programme will continue to promote the waste reduction message.  A large-scale "waste no food" campaign will be launched in all HA estates in the territory, encouraging residents to consume all food at every meal and achieve the target of "zero" food waste at the dining table.

Other officiating guests today included the Chief Executive of the Conservancy Association, Mr Ken So; the Director of Friends of the Earth (HK), Mr Edwin Lau and the Chief Executive Officer of the Business Environment Council, Ms Agnes Li.
