Following is the transcript of remarks by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, at a media session after visiting Yuen Long and Tuen Mun Districts today (August 8):
Reporter: Can you give us some assurances that this will be the first step as part of a wider consultation rather than just as a PR exercise?
Chief Secretary for Administration: Well, nothing is of a PR nature alone. I think we are very committed to fulfilling my earlier pledge that, regardless of the outcome of the Finance Committee discussion last month, Mr Wong and myself will make full use of this summer to visit the districts, especially the three districts which will be most affected by the proposed extension of the landfills, for several purposes.
First is to address the anxiety caused by the extension of the landfill or the current operation of the landfill. Secondly is to see whether there are district aspirations or certain district improvement measures that they want the Government to do so as to sort of offset the need for them to shoulder a large part of the responsibility of the entire Hong Kong population in dealing with the waste that we all generate. So we will continue to do it. This is only the first visit we are doing after LegCo went into recess. We will continue to do these visits and also to engage the stakeholders and to talk with the three District Councils.
