The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

The Housing Authority has partnered with a local green group, the Conservancy Association, to set up a food bank named the Food Resources Recycling Centre (FRRC), which opened at Lei Muk Shue (II) Estate today (July 31).

The FRCC was established to redistribute leftover food gathered in the estate as food resources for people in need. At the opening ceremony, the acting Deputy Director (Development and Construction) of the Housing Department, Mrs Irene Cheng, said that the donation of still edible food to socially vulnerable groups not only minimises the wastage of food, but also improves the living quality of the residents in Lei Muk Shue Estate and strengthens the cohesiveness in the community.

The food at the FRRC comes from chain stores and vendors at Lei Muk Shue Estate and the surrounding community. This year, the FRRC aims to use the food collected to help 30 to 50 socially vulnerable families in Lei Muk Shue (II) Estate, and at the same time alleviate the burden at the landfills by reducing domestic waste by up to 20 tonnes. The current food donors for the FRRC include AEON Stores (Hong Kong) Co Limited, Circle K Hong Kong, Lam Mei Bakery, and several vegetable stalls in Lei Muk Shue Market. The FRRC will also organise environmental activities to promote the green messages of saving food and reducing food waste.
