Working Group on Intellectual Property Trading holds second meeting (with photos)

     The Working Group on Intellectual Property Trading held its second meeting today (June 28).

     The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, and Member of the Executive Council Mr Andrew Liao are the Chairman and the Vice-chairman of the Working Group respectively.

     Mr So said, "We have had a very fruitful meeting that discussed a proposed strategic framework for forging ahead with the development of intellectual property (IP) trading in Hong Kong. We set out our vision to position and promote Hong Kong as the premier IP trading hub in Asia, and exchanged views on a series of possible strategies under four strategic areas:

* Enhancing the IP protection regime;
* Supporting IP creation and exploitation;
* Fostering IP intermediary services and manpower capacity; and
* Promotion, education and external collaboration."

     The Working Group deliberated on ideas to take forward the proposed framework, in particular the need for engagement of relevant stakeholders to garner views and ideas on the proposed strategies as well as an early start of dedicated discussion on some of the more important and specialised subjects.

     The Working Group also welcomes the Government's initiative in working with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Hong Kong Design Centre in co-organising the third Business of IP Asia Forum (bipasiaforum.com) on December 5 and 6 this year. This is a major annual meeting in the region bringing together IP professionals, business leaders and government officials to explore the huge opportunities brought about by the exploitation and trading of IP rights. Members see the joint venture this year as underlining Hong Kong's commitment to a leadership position in making the most of a still nascent knowledge market.
