Appointments to SCOLAR announced

     The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (June 28) announced the re-appointment of Professor Cheng Kai-ming as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) for two years with effect from July 1, 2013.

     Professor Cheng is the Chair Professor of Education at the University of Hong Kong. As a renowned scholar, he has extensive experience in teacher education and education reform as well as a profound knowledge of local and overseas education systems.  

     Mr Ng said, "Professor Cheng is a reputable educationalist who is well-versed in education matters and educational research. The re-appointment of Professor Cheng will help sustain SCOLAR's efforts in its promotion of biliteracy and trilingualism in Hong Kong, thereby enhancing the proficiency of Hong Kong people to meet the ever changing needs of society."

     Mr Ng also re-appointed seven other serving members and appointed five new members to SCOLAR for two years.

     Mr Ng thanked the outgoing members, namely Professor Li Yu-ming, Dr Carrie Willis, Ms Mary Wong, Ms Blanche Tang Oi-lam, Dr Cheung Kwai-yeung and Dr Eden Woon Yi-teng for their sterling service and contributions to the work of SCOLAR.

     "The Government will continue to work closely with SCOLAR in gauging the views of different sectors of the community to maintain quality language education," he said.
