     Hong Kong and Seoul entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the mitigation of landslide hazards today (June 28), marking a new milestone in the co-operation between Hong Kong and Seoul in the mitigation of landslide hazards.

     Representing the governments of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Seoul respectively, the Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Mr Hon Chi-keung, and the Director-General of the Green Seoul Bureau, Mr Oh Hai-young, signed the MOU at the Civil Engineering and Development Department Building.

     Under the MOU, Hong Kong and Seoul agree to co-operate in the following areas through exchange of information and experience:

(1) technical development in the study of landslide mechanisms;
(2) techniques in investigation of landslide incidents;
(3) design and construction of prevention and mitigation measures to reduce landslide hazards; and
(4) greening of man-made slopes and conservation of natural hillside ecosystems.

     "The MOU helps strengthen co-operation between Hong Kong and Seoul in the area of slope safety. It provides an important platform for the two cities to share technical experience and expertise in mitigation of landslide hazards and greening works," Mr Hon said.

     Earlier on, the Seoul delegates visited the natural terrains at Keung Shan Road in Lantau, and Nam Chung Tsuen and Wang Hang Village in Tai O, to learn about the landslide hazard mitigation measures there. They were accompanied by engineers of the Civil Engineering and Development Department.
