Cluster of Respiratory Syncytial Virus cases in Shatin Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Shatin Hospital (SH) made the following announcement today (June 23):

     Five patients (aged 72 to 89) in a male medical ward had presented with fever or respiratory symptoms since June 14. Appropriate viral tests had been arranged for the patients. Test results of five patients were positive to Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The patients are being treated under isolation and three of them have been transferred to Prince of Wales Hospital. One patient passed away due to chronic disease. Other patients are in stable condition.

     Admission and visiting to the ward have been suspended. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the concerned ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
