The Government has accepted the advice of the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee and approved today (May 16) a grant of $2.5 million from the Disaster Relief Fund to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, China to provide emergency relief to the earthquake victims in Sichuan.

A government spokesman said that the earthquake disaster in Sichuan last month had resulted in heavy casualties and extensive damage, and many victims are still in dire need of emergency relief to tide them over the present difficulties. The Committee hoped the grant would facilitate the provision of timely relief to the victims and help them to restore their normal living.

In addition, on the advice of the Committee, the $100 million fund injection approved by the Legislative Council was donated to the Provincial Government of Sichuan.

The recipient government authority and the relief organisation concerned will be required to provide information accounting for the use of the grants upon completion of the related relief activities.
