SHA explores Mainland internship opportunities for Hong Kong youth (with photos)
************************************************************

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, today (April 16) met with the President of the All-China Youth Federation, Mr Wang Xiao, to discuss providing more opportunities for young people in Hong Kong to work as interns in Mainland organisations and enterprises.

The Chief Executive stated in his Policy Address earlier this year that more internship opportunities in the Mainland would be provided for young people in Hong Kong. Through the "Community Participation Scheme for Organising Study Tours to the Mainland", the Home Affairs Bureau has been subsidising youth organisations to help arrange for students and graduates from tertiary institutions to work as interns in the Mainland. With the assistance of the All-China Youth Federation in the liaison, the number of subsidised interns has gradually increased to about 550 in 2012-13.

Mr Tsang said he hopes the All-China Youth Federation would continue to give support and help identify more internship placements in Beijing and other provinces and cities so that the number of interns from Hong Kong can double.

Mr Tsang also met with the Minister of the General Administration of Sport of China, Mr Liu Peng, and exchanged views on strengthening co-operation in sports. Noting that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government places strong emphasis on exchange with the Mainland, Mr Tsang said the Home Affairs Bureau has already signed exchange and co-operation agreements with the General Administration of Sport of China as well as various provincial and municipal authorities. Under the agreements and the support from the General Administration of Sport of China, the two places have launched various forms of exchange and co-operation in different aspects.

"I hope that co-operation between the two places will be further strengthened, fostering the development of sports and raising the standard of our athletes, particularly the elite athletes," he said.

Mr Tsang also called on the Minister of Civil Affairs, Mr Li Liguo, to exchange views on community building and social services. On the assistance for reconstruction in Sichuan quake-stricken areas, Mr Tsang noted that the reconstruction works are mostly completed and new facilities have gradually come into operation.

Mr Tsang then met with the Vice Minister of the State Administration for Religious Affairs, Mr Jiang Jianyong, and shared experiences on religious affairs. He said the HKSAR Government upheld the freedom of religion and proactively encouraged religious organisations to enhance moral education, so as to improve the quality of people and strengthen the caring culture in the Hong Kong community.

Mr Tsang will pay a courtesy call to the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council tomorrow morning (April 17) and return to Hong Kong in the afternoon.
