LegCo Panel on Environmental Affairs visits waste management facilities in Korea

     The Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Environmental Affairs continued its duty visit in Seoul, Korea today (April 3) to study the experience of Seoul on waste management. On the second day of the visit, the Panel delegation was joined by the delegation of the Hong Kong Government.  

     The delegation visited the Songpa recycling centre and received a briefing on food waste recycling in the morning. The delegation then attended a lunch hosted by the Seoul City Government. In the afternoon, the delegation received a briefing on waste management policies by the Seoul City Government. It then visited the Mapo Waste Incinerator to understand its operation.

     The delegation then visited Geumcheon-gu to observe the operation of the volume based waste fee system and food waste recycling operation in the residential and commercial areas in Seoul.  

     The delegation noted that the concurrent implementation of the waste charging system and food waste recycling policy has resulted in a very high food waste recycling rate on average in Korea.

     The delegations will visit the Gangbuk Waste Recycling and Treatment Centre, the Beautiful Store - second hand shop and will meet with the Minister of Environment of Korea tomorrow (April 4).
