LegCo Panel on Environmental Affairs departs for the Republic of Korea to conduct overseas duty visit

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Environmental Affairs departed for the Republic of Korea today (April 1) to begin its five-day overseas duty visit.

     The purpose of the visit is for Members to study the experience of the Republic of Korea in various aspects of waste management, including waste reduction, waste recycling and treatment infrastructure.

     During its stay in the Republic of Korea, the delegation will meet with the Environment and Water Resources Committee of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea, as well as non-governmental green groups. The delegation will visit various waste recycling and treatment facilities, including the Songpa Recycling Centre, the Mapo Waste Incinerator, the Gangbuk Waste Recycling and Treatment Centre, a works project on recycling of construction waste and the Beautiful Store which is a second hand shop.  The delegation will also visit the Cheonggye Stream and the Sudokwon Landfill and observe the volume based waste fee system and food waste recycling operation.

     The itinerary of the visit is as follows:

           system and food waste recycling operation

April 4, 2013 (Thursday)

AM         Visit to Gangbuk Waste Recycling and
           Treatment Center

April 5, 2013 (Friday)

AM         Visit to Cheonggye Stream

AM         Visit to a works project on recycling of

     The delegation is led by Ms Cyd Ho, Chairman of the Panel on Environmental Affairs, and comprises 16 other members: Mr Christopher Chung (Deputy Chairman of the Panel on Environmental Affairs), Mr Vincent Fang, Mr Chan Hak-kan, Mr Chan Kin-por, Ms Claudia Mo, Mr Gary Fan, Mr Charles Peter Mok, Mr Kwok Wai-keung, Dr Helena Wong, Dr Elizabeth Quat and Mr Tony Tse (Panel members), as well as Ms Emily Lau, Mr Tommy Cheung, Mr Frederick Fung, Mr Paul Tse and Mr Wong Yuk-man (non-Panel Members).
