*****************************************************

The new Lam Tin Public Library, located on the fifth and sixth floors of Lam Tin Complex, 1 Hing Tin Street, Lam Tin, will open tomorrow (March 30), offering more comprehensive and diverse library services to residents in the district.

The existing Lam Tin Public Library, a small library currently located at Wing B, G/F, Tak Lok House, Tak Tin Estate, Lam Tin, will be closed on the same day.

The new Lam Tin library is a district library with a floor area of 2 900 square metres. It will provide various facilities and services including an Adult Library, a Children's Library, a Newspapers and Periodicals Section, an Extension Activities Room, express check-in service, self-service book borrowing and renewal service, library catalogue terminals and Internet/electronic resources workstations, and more. In addition, new facilities including an Exhibition Area, a Multimedia Library, a Multimedia Information System, a Computer and Information Centre, a Coffee Corner, a Babycare Room and a Students' Study Room will also be provided. To meet the needs of users, the Students' Study Room with 201 seats came into service earlier in November last year.

The new library has an initial stock of about 140,000 items, which is a large increase in quantity compared to about 70,000 items in the existing Lam Tin Public Library. They include Chinese and English books, encyclopaedias, dictionaries and compact discs, and over 130 local and overseas newspapers and periodical titles for people of all ages and with all types of interests.

In addition, the library will also organise extension activities such as storytelling for children and book displays to promote reading on a regular basis. Students and members of cultural and educational organisations interested in learning more about the library's facilities and services are welcome to contact the library for group visits.

A series of exhibitions and talks on the public library services and family harmony in the community will be held at the new Lam Tin Public Library starting from the end of March. They include the "Our Public Libraries: The Development of Public Libraries in Kwun Tong District" and "My Lam Tin Public Library" exhibitions; a subject talk for promoting family harmony and reading, "Family Harmony Begins with Listening"; and a thematic storytelling workshop for children entitled "Little Black Raven Loves Adventure". There will also be activities related to daily life such as the "Enjoy Easy Life @ Internet" information technology workshops.

The new Lam Tin Public Library will open from noon to 8pm on Mondays, from 9am to 8pm from Tuesdays to Saturdays, and from 9am to 5pm on Sundays and public holidays.
