The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Tokyo) will continue to work hard to foster closer ties and friendship with Japan, leading to more exchanges in various aspects ranging from business and trade to culture, the Principal Hong Kong Economic and Trade Representative (Tokyo), Ms Sally Wong, said today (February 26).

Joining the spring reception organised by the Miyagi Japan Hong Kong Society in Sendai, Japan, Ms Wong said Hong Kong and Japan have enjoyed a mature and stable relationship for many years.

The strong bilateral relationship can be seen in Hong Kong people's efforts to offer care and assistance to the Japanese people and the rebound of Hong Kong visitors to Japan after the great earthquake in 2011, she added.

"Hong Kong continues to be a very safe, hospitable and welcoming place for visitors and investment from Japan and other countries.

"We maintain our own separate system in regard to the economy, government administration, laws, the judiciary, currency, customs territory, immigration controls and so on under 'One Country, Two Systems'.

"Our economy remains vibrant, and we are committed to free trade and free markets, the rule of law and a level playing field for all. Capital can move in and out of Hong Kong freely.

"Our investment regime is highly liberal. Foreigners are welcome to set up or invest in businesses, and our society is open, cosmopolitan and free," Ms Wong said.

She encouraged the guests to explore how they could capitalise on these advantages and Hong Kong's role as the gateway to China, the rest of Asia and the world.
