The Principal Hong Kong Economic and Trade Representative (Tokyo), Ms Sally Wong, today (February 6) promoted the advantages that the Hokkaido business sector can enjoy in expanding into the overseas market through Hong Kong at a business seminar and a reception in Sapporo, Japan.

Speaking on both occasions, Ms Wong pointed out that Hong Kong enjoys a high degree of autonomy under the "One Country, Two Systems" arrangement and is committed to free trade and free markets, the rule of law and a level playing field for all.

"Our investment regime is highly liberal, and foreigners are welcome to set up or invest in businesses. Our economy remains vibrant, and our society open, cosmopolitan and free," she said.

Noting the long-standing, mature and stable ties between Hong Kong and Japan, Ms Wong stressed that Hong Kong continues to be a very safe, hospitable and welcoming place for visitors and investment from Japan and other countries.

Ms Wong encouraged Japanese businesses to explore how they can capitalise on the advantages of Hong Kong as the gateway to China, the rest of Asia and the world.

The business seminar was jointly organised by the North Pacific Bank, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Hokkaido Japan Hong Kong Society with an aim of introducing to the business sector in Hokkaido the latest developments and investment opportunities in Hong Kong.

Also speaking at the seminar were the Director, Japan, of the HKTDC, Ms Shigemi Furuta, and the Principal Consultant of Invest Hong Kong in Tokyo, Mr Yukio Sasaki.

The evening reception, hosted by the HKTDC and the Hokkaido Japan Hong Kong Society and supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Tokyo), was held to provide networking opportunities and enhance the ties between Hong Kong and Hokkaido.
