Cluster of Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A) cases in Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital made the following announcement today (February 4):

     Four child patients (three male and one female, aged 6 to 7) in a child psychiatric ward of the hospital had presented with rash since January 26. Laboratory tests on the throat swab culture were arranged and the samples tested positive for Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A). The patients are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition.

     Admission to the ward concerned has been suspended and restricted visiting has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
