Test results of LPG quality updated
***********************************

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (January 11) announced on its website the latest results of tests on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) quality. In December the EMSD collected 85 LPG samples from all auto-LPG filling stations and LPG terminals in operation. The laboratory test results of all the samples show that the LPG quality complies with auto-LPG specifications.

In addition, the EMSD has been vetting the independent third-party test reports submitted by LPG supply companies for each shipment, to ensure that the quality of imported LPG complies with the specified requirements.

With regard to the incident on December 11 last year when the LPG quality of Chevron's filling stations was found to have failed in complying with the auto-LPG specifications, the EMSD has thoroughly reviewed Chevron's records in relation to its LPG operations and also conducted site inspections. The EMSD has not found any non-compliance in respect of Chevron's in-house operation procedures.

Chevron submitted its interim investigation report on December 31 last year, and pointed out that the cause of this incident may have been related to the barge carrying this batch of LPG cargo. Prior to this shipment, the barge had undergone inspection and overhaul. Chevron is conducting further investigation into this aspect. The EMSD will continue to strengthen LPG sampling for conducting quality tests until Chevron confirms the cause of this incident. It will examine the further investigation report to be submitted by Chevron and consider the improvement measures that may be needed to avoid similar incidents in future.

The detailed results of the quality tests on LPG samples are published and updated on a weekly basis at the EMSD website, www.emsd.gov.hk/emsd/eng/sgi/lpg_smpl_analysis.shtml. Public enquiries can be made via the EMSD's hotline, 2333 3762.
