Appointment of ACAN Chairman and members

     The Government announced today (December 28) that the Chief Executive has re-appointed Professor Daniel Shek Tan-lei as Chairman of the Action Committee Against Narcotics (ACAN) and appointed seven new members and one new ex-officio member to the committee. Nine members of the committee have also been re-appointed.

     Professor Shek and other members' appointments will last for a two-year term from January 2013 to the end of December 2014.

     The newly appointed members are Professor Cheung Yuet-wah, Mr Robert Chow Yung, Mr Hui Yung-chung, Ms Lisa Lau Man-man, Mr Irons Sze Wing-wai, Mr Tik Chi-yuen and Dr Tse Man-li.

     The Commissioner for Narcotics, Mrs Erika Hui, said, "The new members come from different backgrounds including the business, academic, education and social services sectors, the media and the medical profession. With their wealth of experience and expertise, we are confident that they will bring new momentum to the work of ACAN."

     Mrs Hui also expressed gratitude to the seven outgoing members for their contributions to the work of ACAN and dedication to the anti-drug cause. They are Dr Ben Cheung Kin-leung, Dr Samson Tam Wai-ho, Dr Hui Pak-kwan, Ms Shirley Marie Therese Loo, Dr Miro Ng Fei-yeung, Ms Amy Blanche Tang Oi-lam and Mr Yeung Yiu-chung.

     Mrs Hui said, "In the past two years, ACAN had made significant progress in the war against drugs, including the formulation of plans to implement recommendations of the report of the Task Force on Youth Drug Abuse. On behalf of the Government, I would like to extend our deepest thanks to the seven outgoing members for their dedicated support for the work of the committee and active participation in various anti-drug programmes."

     In addition, Mrs Hui noted that the Chief Executive had appointed a new ex-officio member, the Commissioner of Customs and Excise or his representative, to serve on the committee to help the committee to better understand law enforcement actions against drug-related offences and trends in drug trafficking.

     The ACAN is the Government's advisory body on anti-drug matters. It was established in 1965. The full membership list (2013-2014) is as follows:
