Correctional staff intercepts suspected dangerous drugs

Correctional Services staff seized a small quantity of suspected dangerous drugs in a letter posted to an inmate on remand in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (December 13), stopping an attempt to smuggle dangerous drugs into correctional institutions.

At about 2pm, the staff discovered a small transparent plastic bag containing about 0.22 gram of white powder in the letter during normal examination. The case was reported to the Police for further investigation.

The male, aged 30, was committed an offence of burglary and remanded in the Centre.

A spokesperson for the Department said, "With effective mechanism to collect intelligence, the department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs into correctional institutions and to eradicate their presence there. We are committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

There have been 146 seizures of dangerous drugs to date this year. Most seizures were made in reception centres.
