Sir Robert Ho Tung Fund allocates grants to 170 charitable projects

     The Sir Robert Ho Tung Charitable Fund has allocated $8.25 million to 170 charitable projects in the areas of medicine and health, rehabilitation, social welfare, education, community service and anti-drug abuse this year.

     A spokesman for the Fund's Allocation Committee said today (December 7), "The fund's donation enables around 100 organisations to enhance their services, which will benefit a large number of people, especially the underprivileged."

     Major grants included:

* $988,000 for the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals to purchase equipment for the elderly and chronically ill, and to organise education camps for children with special needs;

* $495,000 for the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest & Heart Diseases Association to acquire medical and nursing equipment for Ruttonjee and Tang Shiu Kin Hospitals;

* $364,000 for the Hong Kong Eye Hospital to acquire medical equipment for cataract patients;

* $349,000 for the Yan Chai Hospital to acquire medical and nursing equipment for its patients and frail elderly people;

* $318,000 for the Po Leung Kuk to acquire medical and rehabilitation equipment for the elderly and organise programmes for children with special needs;

* $220,000 for the Hong Kong St John Ambulance to provide first aid training for teachers and staff in secondary schools; and

* $203,000 for the Salvation Army to acquire equipment and organise programmes for children, youth and the elderly.

     Other fund recipients included the Hong Kong Red Cross, the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children, Association for Engineering and Medical Volunteer Services, Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, the Heung Hoi Ching Kok Lin Association, the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, Lock Tao Nursing Home, MacLehose Medical Rehabilitation Centre and Prince of Wales Hospital.

     The Sir Robert Ho Tung Charitable Fund, one of the major trust funds in Hong Kong, was set up in 1956 with a bequest of $500,000 by the late Sir Robert Ho Tung. It is now managed by HSBC Trustee (Hong Kong) Limited.
