Correctional staff stop inmate attempting self-harm

     Officers of the Correctional Services Department stopped an inmate attempting self-harm at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre this morning (October 30).

     At around 10.30am today, an officer found the 21-year-old male inmate behaving emotionally and scratching his left wrist with his fingernails in the centre hospital. The officer stopped him immediately. The inmate sustained minor injuries and was conscious at the time. He was given treatment by a medical officer in the hospital and was later sent to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre for further assessment.

     A spokesman for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

     The inmate was serving a 20-month sentence for wounding.
