A Correctional Services Department (CSD) officer stopped a suicide attempt by an inmate at Tai Lam Correctional Institution last night (August 25).

The 55-year-old male inmate was found lying on his bed and tied round his neck with a bed sheet inside the ward at around 11pm. Following interception, the officer immediately gave him first aid treatment. The man, in a conscious condition, was then sent to the government hospital for further treatment.  He is now in stable condition.

A CSD spokesperson said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The man was imprisoned for two months on a charge of possession of dangerous drugs on August 20, 2012.
