Visitors to Kowloon country parks may be delighted to see troops of monkeys at play. Experts estimate there are about 2,000 of them living in Hong Kong. Many descended from monkeys introduced to the wild about a century ago.
Even though there is plenty of food growing in the parks for monkeys to eat, people insist on feeding them. This has two consequences: the monkeys breed and multiply, and they are fearless towards people.
To help curb the monkey numbers and resolve the nuisance they cause, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has introduced monkey birth control, planted fruit trees to entice them to stay within park confines, and introduced laws to make it an offence for visitors to feed them.
Learn more about these monkey measures and their effects in a feature and video that appear on news.gov.hk today (July 29).
