A 56-year-old woman was sentenced to five days' imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, at the Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts today (June 8) after being convicted of assaulting a Tobacco Control Inspector (TCI).
She was also fined $3,500 for a smoking offence and $1,000 for failing to produce an identity card for inspection.
The incident took place in Hung Hom Market Cooked Food Centre on February 14, 2012. The woman assaulted a TCI when a team of inspectors was inspecting the premises. She was subsequently arrested and charged by the Police.
A spokesman for the Department of Health urged the public to observe the smoking ban requirements and to co-operate with law enforcement officers.
"Intimidation or use of violence on enforcement officers is a serious offence and carries serious legal consequences," the spokesman said.
