Enhanced Police cooperation between Hong Kong and Japan (with photos)

     The Commissioner of Police, Mr Tsang Wai-hung, paid a visit to the law enforcement agencies in Fukushima and Tokyo between May 21 and May 23.

     During his visit to Fukushima on Monday (May 21), Mr Hirai Okinobu, Chief of Prefectural Police, introduced their response and evacuation in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear power plant leakage incident in March 2011.  Mr Tsang also visited the inspection checkpoint at Minami Souma of ˇ§20Kmˇ¨ guarded area and radiation screening centre at J-village. The delegation met officers deployed at both places to understand their workflow.

     On Tuesday (May 22), Mr Tsang paid courtesy calls on Mr Katagiri Yutaka, Commissioner General of Japan National Police Agency, and Mr Higuchi Tateshi, Superintendent General of Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He also met with senior officials responsible for handling natural disasters, cyber crime investigation and cyber counter-terrorism attack.  Both parties stressed at the meetings the importance of maintaining a close and dynamic relationship with regional law enforcement partners and strengthening cooperation on policing issues of mutual concern.

     Mr Tsang also visited the Number One Mobile Police of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, which had been deployed to the affected area of Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami, and the Fukushima nuclear power plant leakage incident in March 2011. During the visit, the mobile police shared their first hand experience at the affected areas and introduced their equipment and protective gears used in the incidents.

     Mr Tsang will return to Hong Kong today.
