Correctional officers stop inmate attempting self-harm

Officers of the Correctional Services Department prevented an inmate from hurting himself in Stanley Prison today (April 17).

The man was found using a bronze-like metal plate to slash his arm and abdomen inside the toilet of the workshop this morning.  He was immediately stopped by the officer-in-charge of the workshop.

He was given medical treatment by the staff of the institution and subsequently referred to government hospital.  Further arrangements will be made for him to attend psychiatric assessment and follow-up.

A spokesperson for the department said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The inmate, aged 24, was serving sentence on charges of robbery and wounding with intent.
