*********************************************************

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Stephen Lam, inspected a passing-out parade comprising 10 station officers, 75 firemen and 46 ambulancemen at the Fire Services Training School today (March 30).

Speaking at the parade, Mr Lam said the Fire Services Department (FSD) has continued to upgrade its training to recruits with a view to further enhancing the emergency services and meeting the growing demands of the community.

"To meet the challenges of our society amid changing circumstances, the department plans to construct a new Fire Services Academy of international training standards at Pak Shing Kok, Tseung Kwan O.  The academy will have the capability to provide a wide range of training from basic fire and ambulance training to different ways of dealing with major disasters, enabling the professionalism of FSD members to rise to new heights," Mr Lam said.

"Apart from providing professional training, the department endeavours to upgrade its equipment by identifying the most advanced and appropriate tools and equipment as well as protective gear for fire personnel.  For example, since April last year, the department has put into use the PBI Matrix Structural Firefighting Protective Suit to provide improved protection for front-line personnel to ensure their efficiency and safety during fire-fighting and rescue operations."

Mr Lam said the department also strived to provide comprehensive emergency service coverage for the public, citing the setting up of the HazMat Team this month to reinforce the capabilities of fire personnel in handling various types of hazardous materials as an example.

He congratulated the graduates for completing their stringent training and wished them all the best in fulfilling their commitment to serve the community.

The parade was followed by a demonstration of fire-fighting and rescue techniques by the graduates.

The graduates have each successfully completed 26 weeks of training and will be posted to various fire stations and ambulance depots for on-the-job training to gain field experience.
