CE-elect speaks to media after courtesy visit to CJ
***************************************************

Following is the transcript of remarks by the Chief Executive-elect, Mr C Y Leung, after paying a courtesy visit to the Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal, Mr Geoffrey Ma Tao-li, this afternoon (March 26):

Chief Executive-elect: I just paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Justice, Geoffrey Ma, underlining the importance I attach to the independence of the Judiciary and rule of law in Hong Kong. It was a courtesy visit, but I thought it is important that I do it on the first day as Chief Executive-elect to underline my view that it is important that Hong Kong upholds an independent judiciary and also the rule of law.

Reporter: Part of establishing confidence in the community is picking your team. When are you going to tell us about your team?

Chief Executive-elect: I'll do my best. It is important, as I said yesterday in my speech, that we have a team that works for the overall and best interests of Hong Kong. Hong Kong doesn't belong to one person and the responsibility of running Hong Kong doesn't rest just on the shoulders of one person. Obviously, as Chief Executive I'd take the ultimate responsibility and I would like to gather as good a team as Hong Kong can offer. That is important. I shall do that as quickly as I can. And according to the Basic Law, the team, the Principal Officials, will be appointed by the Central Government. And when I visit Beijing - and this was part of the discussion this morning when I visited the Central People's Government's Liaison Office - when I visit Beijing I will initiate that process. Thank you.
