********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research:

The Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) and the British Council Hong Kong today (February 16) jointly launched an anthology of winning entries from the English Alliance - Stories Alive: English Story-writing Competition for Junior Secondary Students 2010/11 as handy learning and teaching material for teachers to use in enriching their students' writing activities.

The English story-writing competition was jointly organised by SCOLAR and the British Council Hong Kong in the 2010-11 school year to attract young writers with diverse interests and differing levels of English language proficiency with the primary aim of promoting creativity and enthusiasm for writing in English at junior secondary level.

Six genre-theme categories and three word-length categories were offered in the competition, with a winner, first runner-up and second runner-up awarded in each category. A series of introductory workshops, resources and materials were developed by the British Council for teachers and students before the competition.

The anthology is a collection of 54 prize-winning stories selected from more than 400 entries from some 50 secondary schools. It serves as an interesting teaching resource on a variety of genres and styles of writing. The print version of the anthology will be distributed free of charge to all secondary schools in the territory. It is also available at SCOLAR's website.

SCOLAR has been organising and supporting various programmes and activities to promote biliteracy and trilingualism in Hong Kong. English Alliance is one of the territory-wide programmes launched by SCOLAR in 2008-09 to arouse students' interests in English language learning and to improve their English language skills.

For more information on the anthology, please visit SCOLAR's webpage at www.language-education.com/chi/pbt_eall2.asp.
