Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding the announcement earlier that there were in-patients confirmed to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers, the spokesperson of Queen Elizabeth Hospital made the following update today (February 14):

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts has been performed. One 84-year-old female patient was confirmed today as a VRE carrier during contact tracing, without clinical symptoms. She is in stable condition and under isolation.  

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
