*******************************************************

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) is investigating a lift incident at San Toi Building in Central.

EMSD received at 10.12am today (February 10) a notification of a man found inside the pit of lift no. 1 at San Toi Building, 137-139 Connaught Road Central, Hong Kong.  EMSD immediately deployed engineers to attend the site to carry out investigation.

It was confirmed that the man, aged about 61, was the night-shift security guard of the building. He was subsequently certified dead.

According to observations on site, it was preliminarily suspected that the deceased was trapped inside lift no. 1 this morning.  He opened the lift door by himself and fell into the lift shaft accidentally when leaving the lift car, thus causing this unfortunate incident.

EMSD reminded that when trapped inside a lift, passengers should press the alarm button or use the intercom to contact others for assistance.  They should stay calm in the lift car and wait for rescue.  Moreover, they should not interfere with the lift door operation and try to open the lift door in order to prevent serious injury or fatal accident from happening.
