CHP investigates confirmed case of severe paediatric influenza B infection
*****************************************************

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is drawing public attention to its investigation into a confirmed case of severe paediatric influenza B infection affecting a two-year-old boy.

The boy has had cough and abdominal pain since January 7.  He also developed high fever and convulsions on January 9.   He sought medical consultation at Kwong Wah Hospital on the same day.

His symptoms and signs were suggestive of encephalitis.  The boy was then admitted to the hospital's Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The nasopharyngeal aspirate specimen taken from the boy tested positive for influenza B. He is now in serious condition.

The boy has no recent travel history.  His home contacts did not have influenza-like symptoms.

A spokesman reminded members of the public to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures against influenza.

They are advised to maintain good personal and environmental hygiene and build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise, adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking.

More details on prevention of influenza are available on CHP's website (www.chp.gov.hk)
