Forty people who helped the Police fighting crime were commended at the Good Citizen Award (GCA) Presentation Ceremony today (November 17).
One of the awardees received the Good Citizen of the Year Award (GCYA) while the others received the GCA. With their help, more than 40 suspects were arrested for committing a variety of offences including robbery, burglary, theft, indecent assault, deception and criminal damage.
Mr Wong Kun-leung, winner of the GCYA, helped police arrest a man who committed the crimes of robbery and attempted rape.ˇ@
In August last year, a woman was robbed by a man while she was on her way home. The man also attempted to rape her. Mr Wong drove by and saw the victim struggling. He immediately told his girlfriend to call the Police and got off the car to chase the man. Despite elbows and knees injuries caused by chasing the suspect, Mr Wong did not give up. With the information provided by Mr Wong, the Police eventually arrested the suspect. He was convicted of robbery and attempted rape, resulted in five yearsˇ¦ imprisonment.
Mr Wong was presented with a plaque and a cash award of $3,000. All other GCA winners each received a certificate and a cheque of $2,000.
Three of the GCA winners, Ms Wong Wai-pik, Ms Lung Siu-ping and Ms Shih Zing-lu, separately helped the Police arrest three swindlers. They received phone calls from swindlers claiming to have held their family members and asking for ransom in March and April respectively this year. After confirming the safety of their family members, they reported to and cooperated with the Police. The swindlers were arrested when collecting ransoms.
Speaking at the ceremony, Police Director of Personnel and Training, Mr Ma Wai-luk, commended the award recipients for stepping up for justice and helping the Police fight crime. He pointed out that to beat crime effectively, the Force had to win the support and recognition of the public through its professional and efficient service. Furthermore, the partnership with other organisations and local community was also very important. He thanked the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) for supporting the GCA scheme all these years.
Other officiating guests included member of General Committee, the HKGCC, Mr Oscar Chow, and member of the Fight Crime Committee, Dr John Tse Wing-ling.
Mr Chow said that Police-community partnership in combating crime was essential in maintaining the stable business environment in Hong Kong and that the Chamber would continue to support the GCA scheme which advocated such partnership.
Dr Tse commended Hong Kong Police Force as the best law enforcement agency in the world. Noting that the public fully support the Police, he said that the GCA scheme was a good example showing the partnership of the Force with the community.
The Award, presented twice a year, is organised by the Police Public Relations Branch, with full sponsorship on cash awards from the HKGCC.
