October 2011 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (October 20) the October 2011 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Air Cargo Statistics", "Trade in Services of Hong Kong" and "Pattern of Smoking" are included.

"Air Cargo Statistics"

The Hong Kong International Airport is one of the busiest and most advanced airports.  It consolidates Hong Kong's position as a hub of commerce and plays a very important role in the development of Hong Kong as a logistics centre.  In terms of international air cargo throughput, the Hong Kong International Airport continued to rank first among all airports in the world in 2010.  This feature article provides a detailed analysis of the air cargo statistics of Hong Kong from 2006 to 2010 and briefly highlights the more recent performance of the industry by making reference to the quarterly air cargo statistics from the first quarter of 2009 to the second quarter of 2011.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Trade Statistics Processing Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2582 5039).

"Trade in Services of Hong Kong"

With the structural change in the Hong Kong economy, the importance of services industries has been on the rise.  Being an externally oriented economy, Hong Kong is an important centre not only for trade in goods, but also for trade in services (TIS).  TIS in Hong Kong has been maintaining observable growth in recent years.  In response to the demand for statistics on TIS, C&SD has started releasing detailed TIS statistics by type of services and country/territory on an annual basis since 2002.

This feature article gives a brief account of the framework for compiling TIS statistics in Hong Kong and presents some of the major figures on TIS for 2009.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Trade in Services Statistics Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2802 1350).

"Pattern of Smoking"

C&SD commissioned a private research company to conduct a thematic household survey on pattern of smoking of the Hong Kong population aged 15 and over during October to December 2010 to collect information on the number of smokers and their smoking pattern.  This feature article briefly describes the major findings of the survey.

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and Balance of Payments.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
