The Central People's Government, on the nomination and recommendation of the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, today (June 28) announced the appointment of Mr Gregory So Kam-leung as the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (SCED).

Mr So succeeds Mrs Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan, who resigned for health reasons in April 2011.

"Greg is diligent, receptive and fully devoted to serving the public.  He has gained a comprehensive understanding of the range of work of the Bureau while serving as USCED, and has been effective in discharging higher responsibilities while acting as SCED since March.  I am confident that Greg will do well in his new position," Mr Tsang said.

Following is a brief biographical note on Mr So:

Aged 52, Mr So holds a Master of Business Administration degree, a Bachelor of Laws degree and a Bachelor of Economics degree from universities in Canada.  Before joining the Government in 2008, he had practised law for more than 20 years, initially in Canada and since 1989 in Hong Kong.  He is a member and former vice-chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong.  He is married and has a son and two daughters.
