June 2011 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (June 20) the June 2011 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

     In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Salient Features of Hong Kong's Balance of Payments Account for 2001 to 2010", "The Chinese Medicine Sector in Hong Kong, 2010" and "The Profile of Hong Kong Population Analysed by District Council District, 2010" are included.

"Salient Features of Hong Kong's Balance of Payments Account for 2001 to 2010"

     Balance of Payments (BoP) statistics are important for monetary and financial monitoring and policy deliberations in different areas in both local and international contexts.  Such data also provide an objective basis for gauging the economic situation and in assessing the financial soundness of an economy.  Not only are BoP data crucial elements for many business and investment decisions, but also facilitate macroeconomic analysis on different aspects of an economy.

     This feature article briefly explains the concepts of the BoP account.  It then presents the salient features of Hong Kong's BoP account in the past decade.  The latest development in international standards for the compilation of the BoP account is also highlighted.

"The Chinese Medicine Sector in Hong Kong, 2010"

     In Hong Kong, Chinese medicine is popularly used to cure various kinds of diseases.  The Chinese medicine sector comprises: (a) manufacture of Chinese medicines; (b) distribution of Chinese medicines, such as import/export, wholesale and retail trades; and (c) practising Chinese medicine, including Chinese medicine practitioners of general practice, acupuncture and bone-setting.

     This feature article discusses the updated situation of the Chinese medicine sector in Hong Kong, including the manufacture of Chinese medicines, the distribution of Chinese medicines, the practice of Chinese medicine practitioners and the university programmes on Chinese medicine.

"The Profile of Hong Kong Population Analysed by District Council District, 2010"

     C&SD annually compiles statistics on the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population by District Council district based on data collected from the General Household Survey.  This feature article provides an analysis on the profile of the population of Hong Kong for various District Council districts in 2010.

     Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and BoP.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
