Voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme extended to LED lamps
************************************************************

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (June 14) extended the voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme (EELS) to cover LED lamps.

The department is inviting manufacturers, importers and local agents of LED lamps to apply for the "Recognition Type" energy label under the voluntary EELS.

To qualify for this type of label, the product should meet the energy efficiency and performance requirements of the scheme. A label will be affixed to the product, informing consumers that it meets a certain standard of energy efficiency. With this information, consumers can make better purchasing decisions.

The EELS aims to help consumers select more energy-efficient products, increase public awareness of the importance of using energy-efficient products, encourage manufacturers and product suppliers to market more energy-efficient products and achieve actual energy savings.

With the inclusion of LED lamps, there are now 19 types of household and office appliances covered by the voluntary EELS, which was introduced in 1995.

Information about the EELS is available at the EMSD homepage (www.emsd.gov.hk). Enquiries about the extension of the voluntary EELS can be made by post to the Energy Efficiency Office of the EMSD at 3 Kai Shing Street, Kowloon, by telephone on 2808 3465 or by email to eepublic@emsd.gov.hk.
