The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) held the Annual Donor Award Ceremony today (June 12) to present awards to those who have made 50 donations or above (multiples of 25) in the past year.
In 2010/2011, the number of donors who made 25 donations or more reached 2 393, the highest number in BTS' history. In view of the large number of award recipients, the BTS held a ceremony today and will organise another one next Sunday. The ceremony today made awards to 781 donors who made 50 or more blood donations. Hong Kong's record-holding blood donor, Mr Li Kam-keung, broke his own record again with 475 donations. Outstanding donors in the categories of Rh negative blood, whole blood and combined apheresis and whole blood donations also received special awards. In addition, awards were presented to the schools and organisations that have made an outstanding contribution in organising blood donation activities in the past year:
- Jean Cassels Trophy - to the Top 10 schools with the highest percentage of participation in blood donations (Appendix I);
- BTS Trophy - to the Top 10 schools with the highest number of donations (Appendix II); and
- Special Merit Award - to Swire Properties Management Limited (Taikoo Place) in recognition of their long-term support of blood donation.
The Secretary for Development, Mrs Carrie Lam said that she greatly appreciated the precious contributions of so many regular blood donors. She urged more people, especially youngsters, to support the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) (June 14) by joining blood donation and give regularly to save more lives.
