Visitor jailed for breaching conditions of stay
***********************************************

A spokesman for the Immigration Department said today (June 9) that a visitor was sentenced to jail for two months by Sha Tin Magistrates' Court for breaching conditions of stay in Hong Kong.

On May 27, 2011, Immigration Task Force officers conducted a raid at a conference room inside a hotel in Kowloon and the 58-year-old male defendant was found there giving a training seminar to a group of people. He admitted that he entered Hong Kong on May 17 with permission to stay as a visitor for 90 days and that on May 19 he established a business giving training seminars, with remuneration due after completion of the seminars.

The Immigration Department spokesman said, "Visitors are not permitted to take up employment in Hong Kong, whether paid or unpaid, or to establish or join any business in Hong Kong without the permission of the Director of Immigration. Offenders are liable to prosecution and upon conviction to a maximum fine of $50,000 and imprisonment for two years."
