The Correctional Services Department (CSD) today (June 8) held a launch ceremony for the Drug Fighter Project at its Green Haven Scheme Resources Centre for anti-drug education on Hei Ling Chau.
Under the project, professional social workers will, through small group activities, help inmates in need to stay away from drugs.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Sin Yat-kin said, "Professional social workers from the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) will organise 32 small counselling groups on prevention of drug abuse for inmates from drug addiction treatment centres, training centres, rehabilitation centres and detention centres. Discussion topics in these groups will include the serious consequences of abusing drugs, effective ways to stay away from drugs and ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Some 400 inmates are expected to benefit from this project.
"The department's main publicity theme this year is entitled 'Give Rehabilitated Offenders a Chance'. Through organising promotional activities, we hope to appeal for more public acceptance and support for rehabilitated offenders as well as spread the message of community support for offender rehabilitation. I also hope that more social welfare organisations will follow the example of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals to support rehabilitated offenders and help them to stay away from drugs and cultivate a healthy lifestyle. As a result, they can become self-reliant and law-abiding citizens who can contribute to society."
Mr Sin thanked TWGHs for the kind support of the activity and its Director, Dr Lee Yuk-lun, for the donation of $450,000 to finance the Drug Fighter Project.
