Employer ordered to pay MPF contributions

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (May 19) successfully pursued a claim in the Small Claims Tribunal for $31,690.05 for seven employees who were owed MPF contributions by their employer.

     At the Tribunal's hearing today, the defendant, Tong Kai Man trading as Walker Hire Car Service (formerly known as Just For You Wedding), did not appear. In its absence, the Tribunal ordered it to pay the MPFA the sum of $31,690.05, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable. The amount awarded will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as it is received by the MPFA.

     In addition, the Tribunal ordered the defendant to pay the MPFA a financial penalty of $5,000, which was imposed by the MPFA for failing to make MPF contributions for its employees.

     The Tribunal further ordered the defendant to pay $209 as the costs of the claim.
