CE's statement
**************

The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, makes the following statement today (April 8):

"Earlier on, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau, underwent an operation to remove a colon tumour. While the operation was successful, her doctor advised her to receive follow-up treatment for a period of time.  Having considered its impact on the discharge of her official duties, Mrs Lau has tendered to me her resignation today. After careful consideration, I respect her decision and have recommended to the Central People's Government her removal from office. I shall nominate and report to the Central People's Government for appointment of a successor in accordance with the Basic Law.

I have known Mrs Lau for many years. I was on the board which recruited her as Administrative Officer. I was deeply impressed by her outstanding talent. Since joining the civil service, she served many departments with excellent performance.  Following the resignation of her predecessor Mr Frederick Ma for health reasons in July 2008, Mrs Lau accepted the appointment of the Central People's Government as the successor and left the civil service, serving the nation and Hong Kong in a new capacity. Over the last couple of years, her contributions to various areas, including trade, commerce, tourism, telecommunications and technology, have earned her great respect from different sectors of the community. Her resignation is a loss to the HKSAR Government, which I deeply regret.

On behalf of the HKSAR Government, I would like to extend our gratitude to Mrs Lau for her dedication to public services for over 30 years and wish her a speedy recovery."
