Test results of LPG quality updated

     The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (March 13) announced on its website the latest results of tests on LPG quality.  From early January 2010 to the end of February 2011, the EMSD delivered 152 LPG samples collected from 62 Auto LPG filling stations and five LPG terminals (see table below) to an accredited laboratory for quality tests against the Auto LPG Specification, which is available on the EMSD website: .

     The test results show that LPG quality does not affect the performance of vehicles.

     The detailed results of the tests on the quality of LPG samples are published and updated on a weekly basis and are obtainable from the EMSD website, , or upon request via the EMSD's hotline 2333 3762.

     In addition, the EMSD has been vetting the independent third-party test reports submitted by LPG supply companies for each shipment to ensure that the quality of the imported LPG complies with the specified requirements.

    The spokesman said, "The department has been maintaining a 24-hour hotline since early January 2010 to monitor and follow up on the stalling of LPG vehicles.  As of March 11, 2011, there have been 195 reports on engine stalling incidents via the hotline with the majority received in early 2010.  From February 18 to March 11, 2011, the hotline received two reports of stalling incidents and EMSD carried out inspections of two LPG taxis that broke down.  The breakdowns were found to have been caused by aged parts or incorrect adjustment of air-fuel mix ratio, and were not related to LPG quality.

     "Should an LPG vehicle be found to have irregularities or malfunction during operation, the vehicle owner should as soon as possible arrange for the vehicle to be inspected and repaired by a competent person with relevant experience and training according to the maintenance manuals of the vehicle manufacturers.  The vehicle owner may also report detailed and specific information on the stalling incident through the 24-hour hotline 2333 3762 for follow-up action and assessment of the situation by the department", added the spokesman.
