In response to the recent influenza situation in Hong Kong, the Hospital Authority (HA), in close collaboration with the Centre for Health Protection, has activated the enhanced monitoring system for severe influenza patients staying in the intensive care unit of public hospitals. The HA spokesman today (February 11) announced that there were three newly confirmed human swine influenza (HSI) cases requiring admission to intensive care unit: a 21-year-old female patient at Tuen Mun Hospital who is in critical condition, a 56-year-old male patient at Tuen Mun Hospital and a 63-year-old female patient at Ruttonjee and Tang Shiu Kin Hospital, who are in serious condition. All patients are under Tamiflu treatment while the 21-year-old and 63-year-old patients are on ventilation support. The hospitals will continue to closely monitor their condition.
As at 2pm today, a total of 39 influenza patients were in the intensive care units of public hospitals, including the above three newly confirmed HSI cases.
