In response to the recent influenza situation in Hong Kong, the Hospital Authority (HA), in close collaboration with the Centre for Health Protection, has activated the enhanced monitoring system for severe influenza patients staying at the intensive care unit of public hospitals. The HA spokesman today (February 5) announced that there were three newly confirmed Human Swine Influenza (HSI) cases in critical condition, which included a 23-month-old baby girl at Princess Margaret Hospital, a 13-year-old male patient at United Christian Hospital and a 38-year-old female patient at Yan Chai Hospital. They developed flu symptoms and were admitted to hospital for treatment on February 2 and 3 respectively. They are being treated in the intensive care unit. Some of the patients are under Tamiflu and on ventilation support. The hospitals will continue to closely monitor their conditions.
Furthermore, a 21-year-old critical HSI female patient, which was announced by Queen Elizabeth Hospital earlier, succumbed yesterday (February 4) due to continued deterioration of clinical condition. The hospital would like to express their deep condolences to the patientsˇ¦ family.
As at 2pm today, there were a total of 32 influenza patients staying at the intensive care unit of public hospitals, including the above three newly confirmed HSI cases.
