EMSD follows up on reports of vehicle stalling incidents
********************************************************

In response to recent press reports on LPG vehicle stalling incidents, a spokesman for the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (November 16) said that the department has been maintaining a hotline to monitor and follow up on the stalling of LPG vehicles. Since the hotline was set up on January 4, 2010, 156 reports on stalling incidents have been received up to July. From July up till 5pm today, no report was received.

"EMSD is very concerned about the press reports. We have proactively liaised with the trades with a view to taking appropriate follow-up measures," the spokesman said.

In respect of the press reports, EMSD has immediately contacted LPG vehicle trades to keep abreast of the situation. EMSD has also issued letters to relevant taxi organisations to call upon drivers who have recently encountered stalling problems to report detailed and specific information through the 24-hour hotline 2333 3762 as soon as possible for follow-up action and assessment of the situation by the department.

At the same time, EMSD will continue to vet the independent third-party test reports submitted by LPG supply companies for each shipment to ensure that the quality of the imported LPG complies with the requirements. The department will continue with its LPG sampling scheme by taking random LPG samples on a regular basis at various LPG filling stations and terminals for analysis and publishing the results online for public reference.  Starting from November 19, 2010, EMSD will, on top of the two LPG samples being taken, take one additional LPG sample every week at various filling stations for analysis to further strengthen the examination of LPG quality.

With regard to LPG quality, EMSD has published 93 results of LPG sample analysis from January 7, 2010 to November 15, 2010, covering samples from various LPG supply companies. The results show that the LPG quality does not affect the performance of vehicles.
